Bon Odori July 21, 22: save the dates

Mark your calendars for the annual Bon Odori festival, July 21, 22. Join us for traditional Japanese dance, food, drinks, cultural displays, and a beer garden with live music and happy hour. Times are 4-10 p.m., July 21 and 3-8 p.m., July 22.

Since Bon Odori is a Buddhist event, as always, each day’s dancing will be preceded by a short Buddhist service. New this year: Buddhism 101, brief lecture on Jodo Shinshu Buddhism right before the services.

Dance practice dates:  July 9-12, and 16, 17: 7:30 p.m.

Buddhist Women’s Conference returns Sept. 23

2017 WiB Flyer lite skyline + speakersAfter a year’s hiatus, the temple’s almost-annual Women in Buddhism conference is returning September 23, 2017.

The theme for the day is “Buddhist Paths: Women’s Choices.”

Three outstanding guest presenters have committed to sharing their knowledge and expertise that day: Rev. Carol Himaka, resident minister of Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church; Rev. Candace Shibata, minister at Berkeley Buddhist Temple; and Dr. Kiyoko Tokuno, senior lecturer in Comparative Religion at the University of Washington’s Jackson School of International Studies.

Buddhist study group meets April 16

The next meeting of the Buddhist Study Group will take place on March 12.   The book for this month is Ken Tanaka’s “Buddhism on Air, which is described this way in the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) bookstore blurb.  This latest publication from Dr. Tanaka offers a unique collection of talks and interviews with noted Buddhist teachers and scholars, originally designed for TV presentation.  A variety of topics are discussed related to Buddhism today, including its teachings, practices, and culture, as well as art, songs and humor.

The meeting will take place in the Memorial Hall from 9:30-11:30am.  There will be a brown bag lunch afterwards.  There is no cost to attend.

 

 

Human Nature within Buddha Nature

Rev. Dr. Kenji Akahoshi, longtime workshop facilitator who spent part of his ministerial orientation period at our temple is presenting a workshop, Human Nature within Buddha Nature: Waking up to a Path of Harmony, August 8-10, 2014 at the Quaker Center near Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz mountains.
